Ask Dr. Brickley - Answers:
What is the Capt'N
Gravity Ranger Program?
It is a 26 minute series of movements
that promote the primary pathways involved in stimulating
the brain.
Is movement important?
The better quality stimulation the brain
receives the more efficient and effective it is to evaluate,
impute, and initiate the most appropriate response.
How is the brain normally
stimulated?
Of the vast network that represents our
nervous system, 90% of the information flow is to the
brain. Every action, every fluid, every cell in the body
reports in. The brain needs to know everything, it wants
to know immediately. Put your hand on something hot and
the body needs to know right away. Temperature sense travels
faster so we don't have to wait for the pain sense to
tell us to move our hand. The brain is stimulated by its
environment.
What makes up this
stimulating environment?
Stimulus comes from the outside or external
environment and is received through sight, sound, smell,
touch and taste. Contemporary physiology places this external
environment as contributing about 20% of the stimulation
flowing to the brain.
Present day research supports the position that the majority
of stimulus (up to 80%) flowing to the brain comes from
muscles and joints.
What is the single
biggest stimulus to the brain?
The effect of gravity (weight) passing
through the body is acknowledged as providing the single
most stimulating influence on the brain.
How do muscles and
joints provide stimulation?
Through Tension, Action and Movement.
How do joints move?
Usually in circles or arcs (pieces of
circles).
How do muscles work?
Muscles shorten when they contract.
How does the brain
learn movement?
It learns by doing.
Why is movement so
critical to the brain?
Survival depends on the ability to move,
to move the diaphragm and breathe, to move the jaw and
swallow to eat, to move the bowels and eliminate waste,
to move away from danger, to move yourself forward.
To your brain movement is most important.
How does the body
move?
The brain needs to figure it out. Place
the body and its part in motion and explore the movement
options. To move is to know.
What do the electrical
studies of the brain reveal?
In general, these studies reveal that
in conditions of attention deficit, learning disorders
and depression - the brain is under stimulated.
What can I do to
help stimulate the brain of my child, my class, or myself?
Simply stimulate the muscles and joints
that provide the majority of the excitement to the brain.
Use the Capt'N Gravity Ranger Program as a daily training
routine.
Would everyone benefit
from increased stimulation?
There is no substitute for proper stimulation.
Either you are stimulated and alert or not.
What will this program
do for me?
The Capt'N Gravity Ranger Program will
stimulate the brain and provide a resource of information
that the brain can rely on for its 1st order of importance
- MOVEMENT. Quality of movement is necessary as the intricate
network of the nervous system is self stimulation. The
better the quality of the movement, the better the level
of stimulation and the better the level of learning.
What are the benefits
an ADHD child would receive?
Attention deficit is caused by lack of
stimulation to the brain. Hyperactivity is an incomplete
response to raise the level of stimulation the brain needs.
The brain becomes alert with proper posture and better
quality movement. That is its primary stimulus. Wake the
brain up! Move this way Ranger.
Can I expect any
change in behavior?
The brain receives self gratification
by being better organized. This generally results in behavior
improved.
What about injury
recovery and rehabilitation?
This program would benefit all recoveries
as a better informed brain directs better repairs. Consult
with your doctor.
How long do I need
to do the Program for best results?
The program is best done daily for 4-6
weeks to achieve a significant effect on the brain. Organizational
patterning of the nervous system should be practiced and
maintained on a regular basis. The brain usually takes
4 to 6 weeks to be re-organized into established routines.
The nervous system is organized under movement. Optimal
movement creates optimal benefit. The Ranger's goal is
to reach and maintain optimal benefit.
